GP Survival welcomes the announcement of the government backed indemnity scheme for GPs and seek reassurance that this scheme, unlike others, will be funded from new money rather than recycled or rebadged funds. The proposed scheme is an urgently needed step to retain medical staff in, and attract them to, NHS work within General Practice. As such, given that there is already an 18-month delay before it is slated to come into place, we call on the Department of Health to implement the scheme independently of the lengthy bureaucratic processes involved in primary care contract negotiations. We strongly believe that this scheme needs to be implemented as soon as possible. We welcome confirmation that this scheme will cover all medical professionals involved in the delivery of General Practice services, including GPs working in sessional or partnership roles, as well as the wider practice team. We hope that this scheme will be matched in the devolved nations, ensuring all professionals dedicated to delivering high quality safe care are treated equitably.
